What is RAP?

Essentially, RAP is about keeping work safe.  At its heart there is a powerful risk assessment knowledge base built up from decades of control of work experience. This knowledge is made available at the push of a button, enabling risk assessments to be undertaken at ease.

Once a job has been risk assessed, this knowledge is put to work into the hands of those doing the job in the form of a Permit to Work.  As well as facilitating the production of the risk assessment, RAP controls the work periods, isolations and preparations to ensure work is carried out safely.

Under-pinning the whole package is a comprehensive competency system which ensures that all users interact with the system at the level of their own training and experience – ensuring compliance yet enabling workloads to be spread safely.

What is a permit to work?

‘A permit to work system is a formal written system used to control certain types of work that are potentially hazardous. A permit to work is a document that specifies the work to be done and the precautions to be taken. Permits to work form an essential part of safety systems to work for many maintenance activities. They allow work to start only after safe procedures have been defined and they provide a clear record that all foreseeable hazards have been considered.’

(Health and Safety Executive, 2002)

But RAP is so much more than a permit to work.  Implementation will also present you with the opportunity to optimise your way of working, progress to a risk assessment culture and ensure compliance with all standards and legislation.

Why do you need RAP?

The world is constantly changing but some things you can be sure of.  Legislative demands will become tighter and pressures on manpower will become greater.  Operators will be forced to ensure compliance with ever tighter budgets.  RAP can help spread workloads, optimise ways of working and enable you to react quickly to any required changes.

At some point over the next few years you will (if you haven’t already) adopt an electronic permit to work system.  It makes sense therefore to choose one that has been proven on nearly 40 plants, run through numerous high intensity turnarounds and been running since 1997.  When you add to that RAP’s demonstrated ability to interact with maintenance management programs, lock-out-tag-out isolation systems, COSHH and manual handling systems then the choice is obvious.
